About Stiftung KinderHerz

Roughly every one in 100 children born in Germany is born with a heart defect. That means approx. 7,000 heart defects in children every year in Germany. A figure which shocks and calls for action! Congenital heart defects are the most commonly occurring organ diseases amongst all new-borns. There is a huge variety of these defects, over 50 different heart defects. 70 % of children would die without treatment. More than 4,500 of these children affected by congenital heart conditions need open heart surgery on one or more occasions.

Today more than 100,000 affected children live in Germany. This annually increasing number of patients does not receive nearly as much attention in the public eye which is needed so that medical innovations could contribute, to the full extent it could be possible, to further improve their chances of survival and quality of life. This is why the child suffering from heart disease and their family members are the focus of our actions at Stiftung KinderHerz. For those affected and their parents the result and success of treatment counts which could make the difference to the child with congenital and acquired heart defects quality of life and future.

To guarantee the patient’s quality of care in accordance with current medical opportunities, specialised paediatric cardiac centres are required which can handle both in qualitative and quantitative terms the treatment of complex congenital heart defects and the resulting effects on other organs.

Paediatric cardiac surgery and cardiology has undergone outstanding development in the last 20 years especially in Germany. Given tight budgets this must also be guaranteed for coming years, thus maintaining and further developing the head start which we have in terms of children with heart conditions. German paediatric cardiac centres can then make an important contribution to developing European standards.

Our vision is to achieve the best care for all children with heart conditions. Every child with a congenital or acquired heart defect should be able to lead a care-free life!
